Hai Ba Trung: Two Very Different Ends
It helps to think of Hai Ba Trung as two neighbourhoods. The northern end around Ba Trieu, Hue and Tran Nhan Tong is dense old Hanoi that shades into Hoan Kiem, full of small shops and short streets. The southern end around Minh Khai and Times City is newer, taller and more residential, with a growing foreign population in the apartment towers.
In between sits the university belt around Bach Khoa and the Economics campus, which brings in exchange students and visiting academics. Between the three, this is one of the districts where we see the widest mix of requests, from a 100K men’s cut for a student to a full balayage for someone who has just moved into a Times City apartment.
The salon situation mirrors that. The northern end has plenty of small shops at local prices, none of them set up for an English colour consultation. The towers have salons priced for their residents. What is thin on the ground, again, is the middle: local pricing with a consultation you can actually follow.
Getting Here From Hai Ba Trung
Nhat Tam is at 89 Nguyen Hy Quang, O Cho Dua, Dong Da, by Hoang Cau lake. From the Bach Khoa area, expect roughly ten to fifteen minutes outside peak hours, usually via Dai Co Viet and Xa Dan. From Vincom on Ba Trieu, about the same. From Times City at the southern end, budget twenty to twenty-five.
The Xa Dan corridor is the usual approach and it is one of the better east-west roads in the inner city, but it still seizes up between 17:00 and 18:45. For a colour, balayage or keratin appointment that runs three to five hours, a morning slot is worth arranging: you avoid both rush hours instead of driving into the evening one on the way home.
One note on addresses. Vietnam reorganised its local administrative units in 2025, so newer paperwork and some map layers now label these areas as wards rather than districts. Residents, taxi drivers and ride-hailing apps all still use the familiar names, and so does our address. If a form asks for something that does not match what you see on a map, the street number and street name are the parts that matter.

The colour correction line at 1,000K is worth flagging. It is the service people book after a cheap colour has gone uneven, and it is usually cheaper than starting again from scratch.
Hair That Has Been Through a Hanoi Summer
Most foreign residents hit the same wall somewhere in their first year. Months of humidity, strong sun and daily helmet use leave hair frizzier, flatter at the root and duller in tone than it was when they arrived. Coloured hair fades faster here than in a cool dry climate, and fine hair loses volume.
Three services address the three symptoms. For frizz, keratin at 900K to 1,350K standard or the TRISYS line at 1,215K to 1,575K, which carries more protein and holds its seal longer. For flatness at the crown, a volume perm at 400K standard or 500K VIP, which lifts the root without touching the length. For faded tone, a root touch-up at 400K rather than a whole new colour.
The habit that does the most damage is also the easiest to fix: washing daily with a strong shampoo. In this climate most people are better off washing less often with something gentler, and using a leave-in oil on the ends rather than more shampoo at the root. We would rather tell you that than sell you a treatment you do not need.
The helmet question comes up constantly and the honest answer is that there is no way round it if you ride. What helps is not tying hair tightly under the helmet, and letting it dry fully before putting one on.

Read that against the price table and the point becomes obvious. A 480K colour that will be corrected free for a month is a different purchase from a 350K colour with nothing written down, because the cheaper one puts the whole risk on you. For anyone living here rather than passing through, that is the part worth paying for.
