Best Hair Salon in Hanoi 2026: How to Pick a Trusted One

Every salon in Hanoi calls itself the best. That claim is worth nothing, so this guide takes a different approach: seven checks you can run in five minutes that separate a trusted hair salon in Hanoi from an expensive gamble. They work whether you end up booking with us or with somebody else, and they are the same checks we would use ourselves. At the end you will find our own answers to all seven, in full, including the published prices and the exact warranty terms.

If you already know what you want and just need prices, jump to hair salon prices in Hanoi or haircut prices in USD.

The short version: a reputable salon publishes its prices, writes down its warranty, checks your hair before touching it with chemicals, and tells you when what you want is not achievable. A salon that does none of those things may still cut hair beautifully, but you are carrying all of the risk.

Front of Nhat Tam Hair Salon in Hanoi, a salon with published prices

Check 1: Are the Prices Published Before You Sit Down?

This is the single most useful signal, and it is the one most visitors skip. A salon that publishes a full price list, on a wall or a website, has made a commitment it cannot quietly walk back at the counter. A salon that quotes verbally, in the chair, after seeing your hair, has left itself room.

The pattern to watch for is the quote that grows. You agree a number for colour, then during the appointment it becomes clear that your hair needs an extra step, a stronger product, a second application. Sometimes that is genuine. When the price list was never written down, you have no way to tell.

Ask for the full price before anything starts, and ask specifically what would make it go up. A good salon will answer that question directly, because they have thought about it. In our case every service is on the public price page, including the ones nobody brings up until later, like root touch-ups and colour correction.

Check 2: Is There a Written Warranty, and What Does It Actually Say?

Almost every salon will tell you they stand behind their work. Very few will tell you for how long, and on which services. That gap is where most bad experiences live.

A useful warranty names the service and the number of days. Ours is published and identical at all four branches: perm 90 days, straightening 90 days, bleach and colour 30 days, haircut 7 day free adjustment. Inside those windows a correction costs nothing.

What a warranty should not promise is that you will love the shade. Changing your mind is not a defect, and no honest salon can guarantee against it. Be suspicious of anyone offering unlimited free corrections, because that promise is either not real or it is priced into what you just paid.

The asymmetry matters most for visitors. If you are in Vietnam for three weeks, a 30 day colour warranty is the difference between a fixable problem and a ruined trip.

Check 3: Do They Check Your Hair Before Any Chemical Service?

Porosity is how readily your hair takes on and loses moisture, and it dictates how it will absorb colour and how much processing it can survive. Any salon doing chemical work properly will check it, and will ask what has been done to your hair in the last six months.

If nobody asks about previous bleaching before mixing lightener, that is a genuine warning sign rather than a stylistic preference. Box dye in particular leaves metallic residue that can react with salon lightener, and the results range from an unexpected tone to real damage.

The right conversation sounds like a series of questions: what have you used, how long ago, how does your hair behave when it is wet, has it ever broken. It takes three minutes and it prevents most of the disasters that end up on review sites.

Check 4: Will They Tell You No?

The most reliable marker of a trustworthy salon is a stylist who declines something. If you walk in with a photo of platinum hair and dark, previously coloured hair of your own, the honest answer is that it takes more than one session and may not be advisable at all.

A salon that agrees to everything is optimising for today’s booking. A salon that explains the two-session route, or offers a shade that works on your base, is optimising for you coming back. That second conversation is more awkward and considerably more valuable.

This is also where the language barrier does real damage. Nuance is exactly what gets lost, and “it will be difficult” can be heard as “it will be fine”. If you are working across a language gap, insist on a clear yes or no and use photos to confirm it.

Check 5: Is the Price Suspiciously Low?

Hanoi genuinely is inexpensive, and a good haircut here costs a fraction of what it costs in Europe or Australia. But there is a floor, and below it something is being removed from the service.

For reference, here is what our published prices look like after the standard discount, together with what the service actually involves.

Service After booking + check-in Rough USD What is included
Women’s designer cut 150K about $6 Wash, cut, blow-dry, result photo
Men’s cut 100K about $4 Wash, cut, styling blow-dry
Basic combo, cut + colour (S/M/L) 480K to 780K about $18 to $30 Consultation, cut, colour, wash, basic treatment
VIP combo (S/M/L) 900K to 1,320K about $35 to $51 As above with the VIP product line
Balayage or ombre (S/M/L) 2,280K to 3,120K about $88 to $120 Pre-treatment, hand-painted colour, gloss
Standard keratin (S/M/L) 900K to 1,350K about $35 to $52 Protein treatment, seal, blow-out
Colour correction 1,000K about $38 Evening out an uneven or patchy tone

Every price here includes stylist consultation, a wash and a basic nourishing treatment. USD figures use a reference rate of roughly 26,000 VND to the dollar and are estimates.

A 50,000 VND cut on a side street is not a scam, and plenty of them are perfectly competent. But at that price there is no consultation time, no wash included and no correction policy, and for anything chemical the product being used is the variable you cannot see.

Check 6: What Are the Reviews Actually Describing?

Star ratings are close to useless on their own. What is worth reading is the complaint pattern. Three reviews mentioning that the final price was higher than quoted tells you something specific. Three mentioning a long wait tells you something different and much less serious.

For foreign customers, look specifically for reviews written by other foreigners, because they will mention the thing you care about: whether the consultation worked, whether the result matched the photo, and whether anyone tried to upsell in a language they could not follow.

Be sceptical of a wall of five-star reviews with no detail. Be equally sceptical of one furious review among fifty calm ones. The signal is in the repeated specifics, not the average.

Check 7: Can You Get a Straight Answer Before You Arrive?

Send a message with a photo of your hair and a photo of what you want, and see what comes back. A trustworthy salon replies with a price, a realistic duration, and any caveat that applies to your hair. A less trustworthy one replies with “come in and we will see”.

That single exchange predicts the appointment surprisingly well. It tests whether they will commit to a number, whether they read the photo carefully, and whether the conversation can happen in your language at all. Our walkthrough of booking a Vietnamese salon on Messenger has the exact phrasing to send.

If you are new to Vietnamese salons generally, two more things are worth knowing before you go: the appointment is longer than you expect because the wash is a proper treatment, and tipping works differently from home. Both are covered in the first-timer’s guide and the tipping guide.

Where the Four Nhat Tam Branches Are

Nhat Tam runs four salons in northern Vietnam, and the price list is identical in all of them.

  • Hanoi: 89 Nguyen Hy Quang, O Cho Dua, Dong Da. Phone 0348 288 966. Open 9:00 to 20:00.
  • Thai Nguyen: 579 Luong Ngoc Quyen. Phone 0982 252 691. Open 8:00 to 19:00.
  • Hai Phong: 113 Luong Khanh Thien. Phone 0984 397 804. Open 8:00 to 19:00.
  • Ha Long: 25/4 Street, Hong Gai, roughly 50 metres from the clock tower. Phone 0984 397 804. Open 8:00 to 19:00.

Only two line items differ between the capital and the provinces: a basic wash is 70K in Hanoi against 60K elsewhere, and a scalp exfoliation is 50K against 100K. If you are travelling on, we have English guides for Hai Phong, Ha Long Bay and Thai Nguyen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hair salon in Hanoi?

No honest answer exists to that question, because it depends on your hair and your budget. A better question is which salons publish their prices, write down a warranty, check porosity before chemical work and are willing to tell you when something is not achievable. Those four filters remove most of the risk.

How can I tell if a Hanoi salon is trustworthy before booking?

Send a photo of your hair and a photo of the result you want, and see what comes back. A reply with a firm price, a realistic duration and any caveat that applies to your hair is a good sign. A reply of come in and we will see is not.

Is a cheap haircut in Hanoi a bad haircut?

Not necessarily. Plenty of 50,000 VND cuts are competent. At that price, though, there is no consultation time, no wash included and no correction policy, and for chemical services the product being used is a variable you cannot see.

What should a salon warranty actually cover?

It should name the service and the number of days. Ours is perm 90 days, straightening 90 days, bleach and colour 30 days, and a 7 day free haircut adjustment. It should not promise that you will like the shade, because changing your mind is not a defect.

Why do salons ask what I have used on my hair before?

Because previous chemical work dictates what is possible now. Box dye in particular leaves metallic residue that can react with salon lightener. A salon that mixes bleach without asking that question is skipping a step that prevents most colour disasters.

Do foreigners pay more at Hanoi salons?

At some, yes. The protection is a published price list that applies to everybody. Ours is public and there is no separate foreigner column; the only prices that vary are a basic wash and a scalp exfoliation, which differ between the Hanoi and provincial branches.

How far ahead should I book?

A day or two is usually enough for a cut. For colour, balayage or keratin, book several days ahead, both because those services occupy a chair for three to five hours and because booking in advance takes 30 percent off the price.
