Quick answer: Hair colour in Hanoi is quoted after checking hair length, density, current shade, colour history and whether lightening is required. International visitors should request a strand test when making a major change, share recent bleach or box-dye history, and ask for English support when booking.
Hair colour consultation: what changes the plan
| Request | What the stylist checks | What to confirm before starting |
|---|---|---|
| Darker or tonal refresh | Existing colour, porosity and faded areas | Target shade and maintenance routine |
| Balayage or highlights | Natural base, previous colour and lift required | Placement, brightness and toner plan |
| Blonde or vivid colour | Hair strength, banding and bleach history | Strand-test result, staged sessions and aftercare |
| Grey blending | Percentage and distribution of grey | Coverage level and future root-maintenance schedule |

You are standing in front of a salon in Hanoi, phone in hand, translating a menu you cannot read. The prices look impossibly low. The photos on the wall look impossibly good. And somewhere in the back of your mind sits the question every expat asks before saying yes: if this goes wrong, I have to live with it for six months. Getting a hair dye Vietnam service done as a foreigner sounds risky, yet hair dye Vietnam salons are cheaper and better than most expats expect. Hair color in Vietnam for foreigners is one of the best value services in Southeast Asia, but only when you understand how it actually works. This guide walks you through pricing, product quality, safety, communication, and the specific mistakes that turn a great deal into a costly correction.
Hair color in Hanoi: what it costs and how long it takes
If you want the short answer first: a professional hair color in Hanoi costs $19 to $52 and takes 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on your hair length and the technique. A root touch up sits at the bottom of that range. Balayage, ombre and full lightening sit at the top because they need more product and more hand time.

- Single process hair color (one shade, roots to ends): $19 to $31, about 90 minutes.
- Root touch up: $19 to $24, about 60 to 75 minutes.
- Fashion hair color (ash, pastel, vivid): $31 to $52, two to three hours because your hair is lightened first.
- Balayage or ombre: from $52, three hours or more on long hair.
Two things worth knowing before you book a hair color here. First, the quote is given before anything is mixed, so the number you agree to is the number you pay. Second, length is priced in three bands rather than guessed at the till, which is why two people leaving the same salon on the same day can pay different amounts for what looks like the same hair color.
Why is hair dye Vietnam so much cheaper than home?
The instinct is to assume cheap means diluted product or rushed work. In Vietnam the gap comes from somewhere else entirely: labour cost, rent, and the sheer density of salons competing on the same street. The bottle of L’Oreal Professionnel color sitting on the trolley costs roughly what it costs in London. What changes is everything around it.
- Labour is the biggest line item abroad. A colorist in Sydney bills two to three hours of skilled time at Australian wage levels. That single variable explains most of the difference.
- Volume trains people fast. A busy Vietnamese salon may run more color heads in a week than a boutique studio abroad runs in a month, which builds hand speed and pattern recognition quickly.
- Products are imported, not invented. Reputable salons buy the same professional lines you already know, so the chemistry on your hair is not the thing being discounted.
The practical takeaway: price is not your quality signal here. Product brand, consultation depth, and patch test policy are.
What should you actually expect to pay in 2026?
Prices at Nhat Tam are displayed openly at every branch in both VND and USD, which removes the most common expat anxiety of being quoted one number and charged another. Here is the shape of it:
For more on this, see our guide to Hair Salon in Thai Nguyen for Foreigners: Haircut from $4.
- Designer haircut: from $6 USD
- Chemical service combos: $19 to $52 USD
- Balayage and Ombre: $90 to $124 USD
- Keratin and Japanese straightening: $36 to $100 USD
Ask for the price in writing over Messenger before you arrive. It takes thirty seconds, it removes ambiguity for both sides, and it gives you a reference point if your hair turns out to need more product than estimated. Detailed numbers for individual services are broken down in our Balayage Hanoi price guide.
Staying in the tourist centre? Our guide to choosing a hair salon in Hanoi covers how to reach us and which stylists speak English.
How does this compare to prices back home?
- Haircut: $6 in Vietnam versus roughly $45 to $80 in the US, a saving in the range of 85 to 90 percent
- Full color: $19 to $52 versus roughly $80 to $200, a saving of about 65 to 75 percent
- Balayage: $90 to $124 versus roughly $150 to $400, a saving of about 40 to 60 percent
- Keratin: $36 to $108 versus roughly $200 to $500, a saving of about 70 to 80 percent
Notice that the gap narrows as the service gets more technical. That is honest, and it is the point. Balayage is closer in price because it is closer in skill intensity and product consumption. If a quote for balayage sounds shockingly low anywhere in the city, treat it as information rather than luck.
Is it safe for sensitive scalp and non Asian hair?
This is the question behind the question. Fine Northern European hair, tightly curled hair, and hair carrying six months of box dye all behave differently under lift, and a stylist who only ever works on one hair type will not know that instinctively. What protects you is process, not luck. For hair that already carries a colour you want taken out, see our page on colour correction for foreign clients in Hanoi.
- Skin patch test: available on request, done 24 hours before your color appointment. Ask for it if you have ever reacted to dye, however mildly.
- Please tell the salon about allergies, sensitivities, pregnancy or nursing before booking. Ask to see the exact product label and confirm suitability during the consultation before any chemical service begins.
- Sulfate free aftercare: gentler on a scalp that is already reacting to a new climate and different water.
- International product lines: L’Oreal Professionnel, Kerastase and MQG Vietnam, so the chemistry is familiar to your hair.
One practical tip most people skip: mention every chemical service from the past twelve months, including henna and at home toners. Henna in particular can react unpredictably with peroxide. Your stylist cannot see it, and your hair will not forgive the omission.
How do you communicate what you want without shared language?
Words fail. Photos do not. The single highest leverage thing you can do is arrive with images, and the right kind of images.
- Bring three photos, not one. One perfect reference is ambiguous. Three photos of the same tone from different angles reveal what you actually mean.
- Bring one photo of what you do not want. This prevents more mistakes than any positive reference.
- Photograph your current hair in daylight. Salon lighting flatters and hides. Daylight tells the truth about your starting level.
- Confirm the plan before the first bowl is mixed. Point at the photo, point at your hair, get a nod. Thirty seconds of friction now saves a correction later.
How do you book, step by step?
- Message on Messenger: m.me/nhattamhairsalon, with English speaking replies.
- Send your inspiration photos rather than describing the result in words.
- Give your hair history: current condition, length, and every past chemical treatment.
- Confirm the four details: time, service, price, and which branch.
- Arrive five minutes early so the pre consultation is not rushed.
Nhat Tam operates four branches: Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong and Ha Long. Confirming the branch in your first message avoids the most common booking mix up.
What should you avoid doing?
- Do not stack chemical services in one day. Color plus perm plus keratin in a single sitting is how good hair becomes damaged hair. Space them out.
- Do not skip the patch test if your skin has ever reacted, even years ago.
- Do not assume a walk in slot exists for balayage. Major color work needs a booked block of time.
- Do not bring your own products unless the salon has agreed in advance, since mixing unknown chemistry creates risk nobody can price.
- Do not over tip. Tipping is optional in Vietnam, and generosity that feels normal at home can feel awkward here. More on this in our guide to tipping at a Vietnamese hair salon.
How do you protect the color once you leave?
Vietnam is hard on colored hair in ways your home country was not. Humidity swells the cuticle, strong sun oxidises tone, and pool chlorine pulls ash shades toward green. A few habits carry most of the weight.
- Wait 48 hours before the first wash so the cuticle closes around the pigment.
- Switch to sulfate free shampoo, which is the single biggest lever on how long tone survives.
- Rinse with fresh water before swimming. Hair already saturated absorbs far less chlorine.
- Book a toner refresh when brassiness appears rather than waiting for the full regrowth appointment.
If your hair is already stressed from previous lightening, a strengthening treatment before color is usually the better sequence. Our team can advise on this at the consultation, and our keratin treatment guide explains when it helps and when it does not.
Should you colour your hair in Vietnam at all? A decision table
This is the question most visitors actually arrive with, and the honest answer depends on three things only: the state of your hair today, how far you want to move from it, and how many days you have. The table below is the same logic our colourists use at the consultation, written out so you can decide before you book.
| Your situation | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Uncoloured hair, you want a richer brown or one to two levels darker | Go ahead, one visit | Depositing colour is the lowest risk service we offer. Nothing has to be lifted, so condition is preserved. |
| Uncoloured hair, you want light blonde | Possible, but plan two or more sessions | Asian and most European hair both hold strong warm pigment underneath. Reaching a clean pale tone in one day is where damage happens. |
| You used a box dye at home in the last six weeks, especially black or very dark brown | Book a correction consultation, not a colour | Box dye deposits unevenly and often contains more pigment than a salon formula. The first job is mapping what is already in the hair. |
| Previously bleached, and the ends feel stretchy when wet | Strengthen first, colour at the next visit | Hair that stretches and does not spring back has lost internal structure. Any further chemical step risks breakage. |
| You fly out in under three days | Choose a gloss or toner, not a lift | A gloss gives a visible change with no recovery window. A lift may need a second appointment you will not be here for. |
| Scalp is irritated, sunburnt, or you recently had a peel or scalp treatment | Wait | Broken skin changes how the scalp reacts to any product. This is not a judgement about the product, it is about the skin. |
| You have a reference photo of hair very different from yours in texture or base | Consultation first | We can usually build a version of that photo that suits your base. Promising the photo itself would be dishonest. |
| You are pregnant or breastfeeding | Ask your doctor, then tell us what they said | That is a medical decision and not ours to make. If you do go ahead, we can use techniques that keep product off the scalp. |
If your row says consultation or wait, that is still a useful appointment. You leave with a written plan, a realistic number of sessions, and a price, which is more than most people have when they walk in. Our guide to hair porosity and colour results explains why two clients with the same natural shade can need completely different timings.
When we will ask you to wait, and why
A salon that never says no is not being kind to you. These are the specific conditions that make us stop and rebook rather than proceed on the day. Each one is checked before any product is mixed, and you will be shown what we found.
- The strand fails the stretch test. A wet strand that keeps stretching without returning has lost its protein structure. Lightening that hair is how length is lost.
- Henna or a metallic dye may be present. Some plant based and traditional dyes contain metallic salts that can react with peroxide and generate heat. If you are unsure what you used, say so. We will test a hidden strand first, and that test takes minutes.
- The scalp is broken, inflamed, or very recently treated. We will happily do a wash, a scalp care session, or a cut on that visit instead.
- Your hair is already at its lift ceiling. Every head of hair has a point where further lightening buys tone at the cost of integrity. We would rather show you that line than cross it.
- You have an important event inside 48 hours. Colour settles, tone shifts slightly after the first wash, and you deserve a margin. Before a wedding we schedule two weeks ahead where possible.
- We cannot agree on upkeep. If a colour needs a toner every five weeks and you will be in Vietnam for three, we will suggest a version that ages well instead.
Being told to wait once is far cheaper than a correction. If you are already in the correction situation, the options and their real costs are set out in our colour correction guide for Hanoi.
What is not achievable in a single visit
Clear limits are part of a fair price. The following are not single visit outcomes on most hair, no matter which salon you choose or what you pay, and we would rather you read it here than hear it in the chair.
- Black box dye to a light cool brown. Removing artificial black pigment is a separate process from lightening natural hair, and it usually needs two appointments with recovery between them.
- Natural dark hair to platinum in one day. It is physically possible on strong virgin hair and still the wrong choice for most people, because the margin for error is almost zero.
- A clean ash or smoky tone over a freshly orange base. Toner neutralises, it does not erase. The base has to be lifted far enough first, which is a second session.
- Keeping full length while lifting several levels. You can usually keep the length or reach the level, and choosing is better than discovering it afterwards.
- Matching a colour you saw on hair of a very different texture. We can match the mood, placement, and depth. We cannot change what pigment sits under your own hair.
Here is what the same visit does comfortably: one to two levels of change, a full gloss or tone refresh, a root touch up, face framing lightening, and a balayage that is placed to grow out softly. If blonde is the goal, read how the stages are actually spaced in our guide to going blonde in Hanoi before you set a date, and use the undertone guide to narrow the shade.
We do not offer at home hair colour, and what to do if you cannot get to a salon
People search for an at home colour service in Hanoi for sensible reasons: a small child, a tight schedule, limited mobility, or simply not wanting to navigate a new city. We do not send colourists to homes or hotels, and the reason is not convenience. It is that the parts of a colour service which protect you cannot travel.
- Controlled water and a backwash basin. Rinsing lightener on time, at a controlled temperature, with the client positioned safely is not something a bathroom tap replicates.
- An emergency rinse within seconds. If a scalp reacts, the response has to be immediate. That is the single strongest argument against a home service.
- Neutral lighting. Tone is judged against a known light source. Living room lamps and hotel bathrooms both lie, in opposite directions.
- Patch and strand testing with a record. Tests belong on file with your formula, so the next visit starts from evidence rather than memory.
- Safe disposal and ventilation. Lightener and developer should not be rinsed into a household sink or mixed in an unventilated room.
If coming in is difficult, these usually solve it. Book the first slot of the morning or a weekday afternoon, when the salon is quietest. Choose the branch closest to you rather than the most central one. Ask for a single focused service, so the appointment is 45 to 60 minutes rather than half a day. If you are travelling with a child, tell us when you book and we will seat you where there is room. And if someone offers to come to your hotel with lightener, ask them the five questions above before you agree to anything. The same habit of checking applies to any salon, including ours, and our seven trust checks give you the full list.
Ready to plan it properly? Book a colour consultation online and tell us in the notes what you used last, when, and the date you fly out. That one sentence saves most of the guesswork.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book a same day appointment as a foreigner?
Yes for haircuts and simple services. For balayage or keratin we recommend giving 24 to 48 hours notice, since those services need a reserved block of stylist time. Message us on Messenger for real time availability at your chosen branch, and confirm the price in the same conversation.
What happens if I am unhappy with the color?
Nhat Tam offers a 30 day free adjustment policy, meaning we will modify the color or style at no additional cost within that window. Come back as soon as you notice the issue rather than waiting, because tone corrections are far easier on freshly processed hair than on hair that has been washed for weeks.
Will the stylist understand my hair type?
Bring photos of your natural texture and be direct about your hair history, including any henna or box dye. Our stylists work with international clients regularly, but your history is information only you hold. Sharing it upfront lets the team choose the right developer strength and processing time for your hair rather than a default.
Is tipping expected at a Vietnamese salon?
Tipping is optional and not built into pricing the way it is in the United States. A small tip is appreciated when you are happy with the result, but no one expects it and nobody will think less of you for skipping it. Warm feedback and a returning booking are valued just as much.
