You can pay 60,000 VND for a cut on a side street or twenty times that at a West Lake address aimed squarely at expat wallets. Tay Ho is the expat heart of Hanoi. Xuan Dieu, Quang An, Tu Hoa and Nhat Tan hold a large share of the city’s foreign residents, along with the international schools, the western grocery shops and the cafes that come with them. That concentration does something predictable to prices.

At the top end you will find salons that price in dollars, staff an English-speaking receptionist and charge four to eight times the Hanoi average. Some of them are genuinely excellent. At the bottom end are neighbourhood shops charging 50,000 to 80,000 VND for a cut, where the work can also be perfectly good but nobody will be able to discuss a colour correction with you.

The gap in the middle is what frustrates most residents. What they want is a salon that costs roughly what Vietnam costs, but where the consultation happens in a language they speak and the outcome is written down. That is the slot Nhat Tam occupies: Vietnamese prices, published openly, with a warranty you can point at.

One more thing worth saying plainly. A higher price in Tay Ho does not reliably buy better technical work. It frequently buys location, interior design and a receptionist who speaks fluent English. Those have value, but they are not the same as a stylist who understands what bleach will do to your hair in a humid climate.

Getting to the Salon From West Lake

Nhat Tam is at 89 Nguyen Hy Quang, O Cho Dua, Dong Da, near Hoang Cau lake. From the Xuan Dieu and Quang An side of West Lake, expect roughly fifteen to twenty minutes outside peak hours, running down through Ba Dinh. From Truc Bach or the southern edge of the lake it is closer to twelve to fifteen. Those are estimates, not promises: the Hanoi variable is always traffic, not distance.

The practical advice is to avoid arriving between 17:00 and 18:45. The roads between West Lake and Dong Da are among the busiest in the city at that hour, and a fifteen minute ride can triple. Morning appointments are calmer in both directions, and if you are booking a colour or keratin service that runs three to five hours, a morning start is the difference between finishing relaxed and finishing at closing time.

One note on addresses. Vietnam reorganised its local administrative units in 2025, so newer paperwork and some map layers now label these areas as wards rather than districts. Residents, taxi drivers and ride-hailing apps all still use the familiar names, and so does our address. If a form asks for something that does not match what you see on a map, the street number and street name are the parts that matter.

What It Costs, in VND and Roughly in USD

These are the published group prices, the same ones Vietnamese customers pay. Booking ahead removes 30% and checking in at the salon removes a further 10%, which is why the right-hand column is what nearly everyone actually pays.

USD conversions use a reference rate of about 26,000 VND to the dollar and are estimates. VND is what you pay.

Hanoi Weather and What It Does to Your Hair

Almost every foreign resident notices this in the first year. Hanoi humidity sits high for much of the year, summer brings strong sun, and the winter months bring a damp grey stretch that is hard on the scalp. Hair that behaved perfectly in a dry climate starts to frizz, swell and lose its shape within weeks.

Two services address it directly. A keratin treatment smooths the cuticle and holds the frizz down for months; standard keratin is 900K to 1,350K depending on length, and the VIP line runs 1,800K to 2,700K with more protein and a longer-lasting seal. The part that decides whether a 2,280K balayage still looks good in week six is not the colour work. It is what you wash it with. Hanoi tap water is hard in places, the sun is strong from roughly April onwards, and a sulphate-heavy shampoo will strip a fresh tone faster than anything else you can do to it.
